Understanding the why
behind the behavior
Every behavior has a function — a reason behind it. At Behavioral Independence, we don't simply try to stop challenging behaviors. We identify what's driving them, then build a personalized plan that replaces maladaptive behaviors with meaningful, functional alternatives that serve the learner better.
"Our mission is to increase and maintain activity engagement, communication, social interaction, and daily living skills — while decreasing maladaptive behaviors."
Every person's journey is unique. We work with diverse individuals and understand that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work for behavior.
Collaboration is key. We work hand-in-hand with caregivers, schools, and other providers to achieve the highest level of independence for our learners.
Caregiver involvement accelerates progress. Research shows that active parental participation helps learners reach their goals faster — so we train families alongside our learners.
Evidence-based practices only. We focus on effective, research-supported strategies to achieve the best results in the shortest amount of time.
Before we create any plan, we take time to understand the full picture. Challenging behaviors in toddlers, children, and young adults almost always serve a purpose — and that purpose must be identified before it can be addressed effectively.
Behavior is communication — we listen first
OUR APPROACH
-
We begin with a thorough assessment — observing the learner across settings, gathering information from caregivers and teachers, and analyzing data to identify the function of the behavior. Is it attention-seeking? Escape-motivated? Sensory? The function drives everything that comes next.
-
We collect data on every behavior we target — frequency, duration, intensity, and antecedents. This data isn't just paperwork; it's how we know what's working, what needs adjusting, and how to demonstrate real progress to families and schools.
-
Reducing a behavior without teaching an alternative leaves a gap. For every behavior we target, we identify and teach a functional replacement — something that meets the same need in a way that serves the learner better in everyday life.
-
Behavior change that only happens during a therapy session isn't enough. We deliver services at home, at school, and in the community — ensuring that the skills and strategies we teach transfer across every environment the learner navigates.
What a Behavior Reduction Plan actually contains
THE PLAN
A Behavior Reduction Plan is a living, individualized document — not a generic template. Every plan is developed by a BCBA, reviewed with the family, and updated regularly as the learner progresses.
Here's what goes into every plan we create:
1.
Operational Definition of Target Behavior
A precise, observable description of the behavior so that every person working with the learner measures and responds to it consistently.
2.
Functional Behavior Assessment Summary
A summary of the assessment findings — what triggers the behavior, what maintains it, and what function it serves for the learner.
3.
Antecedent Strategies
Environmental modifications and proactive strategies that reduce the likelihood of the behavior occurring in the first place.
4.
Replacement Behavior Plan
The specific alternative behavior we will teach, how we will teach it, and how we will reinforce it to make it more functional than the challenging behavior.
5.
Consequences Strategies
Clearly defined responses for every team member — therapist, teacher, and caregiver — so that reactions to the behavior are consistent and do not inadvertently reinforce it.
6.
Crisis Protocol (If Applicable)
For behaviors that pose a safety risk, a specific crisis management protocol is included. Our team is trained in crisis management and safety procedures.
7.
Data Collection & Progress Monitoring
How data will be collected, how often it will be graphed and reviewed, and what criteria indicate the behavior goal has been met.
Behaviors that get in the way of independence
WHAT WE ADDRESS
We work with toddlers, children, and young adults across a wide range of challenging behaviors — always with the goal of replacing them with something more functional.
Aggression
Elopement
Tantrums
Self-Injurious
Non-Compliance & Refusal
Stereotypy
You are an essential part of the plan
Research is clear: active caregiver participation helps learners reach their goals faster. That's why every Behavior Reduction Plan includes direct, hands-on training for the people who matter most.
Our BCBAs and BCABAs provide in-person training that goes beyond explaining the plan. We demonstrate, we practice alongside you, and we collect data on your progress to make sure you feel confident and equipped.
In-person demonstrations of ABA concepts and techniques
Explanation of the reasoning behind every strategy
Data collection on caregiver implementation progress
Consistent communication between sessions for support
Training extended to teachers and school staff where applicable
"We empower caregivers through comprehensive training on behavior improvement plans — because when families are equipped with the right tools, learners thrive around the clock."
